MT5 Server Setup After License Approval: From MetaQuotes Approval to Go-Live
MetaQuotes has approved your MetaTrader 5 license. This is the broker-side runbook for what comes next: hosting, server installation, configuration, liquidity, testing and the checks to complete before the first real client logs in.
MT5 server setup after MetaQuotes license approval: hosting you control, trade, history and access servers, groups, symbols, feed, bridge, testing and go-live.
What happens after MetaQuotes approves your MT5 license?
After approval, the work moves from paperwork to engineering: you choose hosting, the MetaTrader 5 server software is installed on it, and your team configures the platform until it can safely accept real clients.
MetaQuotes states this plainly on its page for brokers buying MetaTrader 5:
"We do not offer SaaS or other similar solutions which would permit even partial external management or third-party control over your company's operations, and thus we have no access to your servers, accounts, or your clients' trading history."— MetaQuotes, Buy the MetaTrader 5 Platform (accessed October 2026)
In practice, that gives a new licensee four jobs after approval:
- Infrastructure: choose a data center or cloud, size the servers and secure the network.
- Installation: deploy the main trade server, the history server and access servers. MetaQuotes says installation can be done by you or by MetaQuotes as part of the delivery set.
- Configuration: set up manager roles, groups, symbols, sessions, swaps, the data feed, the liquidity connection, plugins and reports.
- Operations: test, go live, then monitor, update, back up and support the platform every trading day.
If you are still before approval, start with our MetaTrader 5 license onboarding guide and the MetaQuotes license document checklist. This page picks up where those end.
Where should MT5 servers be hosted?
MT5 servers must run on infrastructure your company controls: dedicated hardware in a data center, a cloud account in your company's name, or a mix of both. MetaQuotes leaves the choice to the broker and names Equinix, AWS, Azure and Alibaba Cloud as examples in its guide to starting a brokerage.
"Select the hosting provider to have the servers installed. Installation of MetaTrader 5 servers is straightforward and can be either done by you, or MetaQuotes can do the installation"— MetaQuotes, How to Start a Brokerage Business, Step 4 (accessed October 2026)
Place the trade server close to your liquidity providers and bridge, since every order travels there and back. Access servers are the entry points clients connect to, so they belong close to clients; MetaQuotes notes traders "will not be directly connecting to your trade server for security reasons".
| Option | What it is | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated servers / colocation | Your own hardware or rented bare metal in a financial data center (for example Equinix sites) | Trade server and bridge near liquidity providers; predictable performance | Hardware lifecycle, remote hands, cross-connects to your liquidity providers |
| Cloud (AWS, Azure, Alibaba Cloud and others) | Virtual machines in an account owned by your company | Fast start, history and backup servers, test environments | Noisy neighbours, network distance to LPs, account ownership must stay with the broker |
| Specialist MetaTrader hosting | A hosting company that runs MT servers for brokers, on contract to you | Teams without in-house system administrators | Who holds admin credentials; exit plan; data ownership in the contract |
| MetaQuotes Access Server Hosting | Access points only, ordered from MetaTrader 5 Administrator | Getting clients in many regions connected quickly | It does not host your trade server; it complements your own infrastructure |
MetaQuotes announced Access Server Hosting on 5 May 2022, listing Equinix LD4, NY4 and HK1, Servers.com in Amsterdam, and Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Lagos and Johannesburg, with access points launched "in a couple of clicks straight via MetaTrader 5 Administrator".
One rule matters more than the provider you pick: every hosting contract, cloud account and domain should be in the licensed company's name. FXSUPPORT runs MetaTrader infrastructure in the UK and the Netherlands for brokers who prefer that. See MetaTrader server hosting and forex VPS hosting.
Which MT5 server components are installed?
A MetaTrader 5 installation is a set of servers, not one program: a main trade server, a history server, access servers, and optionally additional trade servers and backups, all administered through MetaTrader 5 Administrator and Manager. MetaQuotes describes MT5 as a distributed architecture where "different functions are performed on different servers".
| Component | Role | Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Main trade server | Accounts, orders, positions, margin and platform configuration | Near liquidity and bridge; never exposed directly to clients |
| Additional trade servers | Distribute trade processing (MetaQuotes mentions them for the Standard and Enterprise tiers) | Same core site or a second region |
| History server | Stores and serves price history (bars and ticks) to terminals | Core site, with enough fast storage |
| Access servers | Entry points for desktop, web and mobile terminals; shield the trade server | Close to clients; can be MetaQuotes-hosted |
| Backup servers | Real-time copies of databases for recovery and failover | A different site from the main server |
| Gateways and data feeds | Connect quotes and execution to liquidity providers, exchanges or bridges | Near the trade server and the LPs |
| Administrator / Manager terminals | Configuration (Administrator); dealing, accounts and reports (Manager) | Staff workstations behind restricted access |
What you receive depends on your tier. MetaQuotes lists three: Entry (1,000 real accounts), Standard (25,000) and Enterprise (200,000). For Entry it says "the main trade server provides high-performance capability to effectively service both: real and demo accounts". For Standard it says "trade servers enable you to gain distributed trades processing capacity". The Enterprise tier "includes a complete set of all available system components". Confirm exactly what your delivery set includes before designing the network.
MetaQuotes states that "The MetaTrader 4 trading platform licenses are no longer available for purchase", so new projects are MT5 only; see MT4 to MT5 migration.
Step-by-step: MetaTrader 5 server installation and configuration
A clean MT5 server setup follows a fixed order: secure infrastructure first, then installation, then configuration from the inside out (roles, groups, symbols, feed, liquidity, plugins, reports), and only then client-facing pieces.
- Agree the architecture. Which servers, where each runs, how they connect, which ports are open, including bridge, CRM and backup site.
- Prepare and harden the hosts. Supported Windows Server builds, current patches, firewall rules, VPN-only administrative access, time synchronisation and DDoS protection on public addresses. See DDoS protection.
- Install the servers. Main trade server first, then history and access servers, then backups. You or MetaQuotes can do this; either way, the credentials and certificates belong to your company.
- Set up administration. Create Administrator and Manager accounts per person, with permissions by role (administrator, dealer, risk manager, back office). Avoid shared logins.
- Define the server name and branding. The server name is what clients type in the terminal to find you. Keep it consistent with your website and licensed company.
- Configure groups. Leverage, margin call and stop-out levels, commissions and permitted symbols per real and demo group.
- Configure symbols. Contract size, digits, sessions, margin, swaps and markup per instrument.
- Connect the data feed. Map feed symbols to platform symbols, set filters for bad ticks and add a secondary feed for failover.
- Connect liquidity. Install the gateway or bridge, map symbols and volumes, set routing (A-book, B-book or hybrid) and coverage accounts.
- Install plugins. Only the server and manager plugins you need, each tested on demo first.
- Configure reports and data export. End-of-day statements, dealing and risk reports, SQL export to your back office.
- Integrate client-facing systems. CRM, portal, KYC and payments via the Manager or Web API.
- Set backups and monitoring. Backup schedule, a tested restore, log monitoring and alerts to the on-call engineer.
- Test, train and go live. Run the checklist below, sign off and open real accounts in stages.

How to configure MT5 groups and symbols
Groups decide the trading conditions for each set of accounts; symbols define each instrument. Together they carry most of a broker's commercial and risk settings, so design them on paper before entering them.
| Feature | MetaTrader 5 | MetaTrader 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Server architecture | Distributed | Single |
| Account groups | Unlimited | 512 |
| Security groups | Unlimited | 32 |
| Symbols | Unlimited | 1,024 |
| Execution modes | 4 | 3 |
| Accounting systems | Netting and hedging | Hedging only |
| Order fill policies | Fill or Kill, Immediate or Cancel, Return | Fill or Kill |
| Reports | Charts (HTML5) and tables | Tables only |
| SQL export | Native (MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle) | Limited (MySQL) |
A practical group plan covers real groups by account type, deposit currency and execution route; demo groups that mirror them; and internal groups for IBs, bridge coverage and testing. Use readable names such as real\std\usd\b so dealers can see the routing at a glance.
For symbols, build one template per asset class and copy it. Check sessions, holidays, swaps, triple-swap day, margin rates and DST changes against your liquidity provider. Mismatched sessions are among the most common causes of rejected orders in the first weeks. Our swap management and margin management pages go deeper.
Connecting the data feed, liquidity provider and bridge
An MT5 server needs two connections before it can trade: a price feed for quotes and an execution route to liquidity. They can come from the same provider or from different ones, but both must be mapped symbol by symbol and tested for failover.
MetaTrader 5 offers three main routes:
MetaQuotes gateways and Ultency
MT5 ships with gateways to liquidity providers and exchanges. MetaQuotes describes its Ultency matching engine as giving access to "more than 30 liquidity providers" with latency "of up to 0.1 ms" (MetaQuotes' own figures).
Third-party bridge or aggregator
A bridge such as PrimeXM XCore, oneZero Hub or Match-Trade connects MT5 to several LPs, with routing and risk rules outside the platform. See bridge solutions.
FIX API connection
A direct FIX session to a prime broker or LP through a gateway, common for institutional liquidity. See FIX API integration.
Before testing, agree with the liquidity provider on symbol naming, contract sizes, sessions, the coverage account margin model and how rejections and partial fills return to MT5. Then set routing per group: A-book, B-book or hybrid. Your risk team should sign off these rules; see forex risk management and A-book and B-book technology.
For quotes, add a second feed and filters for spikes and frozen prices; filling clients on a bad tick is expensive to unwind. Details: data feed setup and liquidity provider integration. Vendor-specific guides: PrimeXM XCore, oneZero Hub, Match-Trade. These are technologies we work with, not partners.

Plugins and APIs extend MT5 where the standard settings stop: risk automation, bonuses, IB commissions, CRM sync and custom reports. Add them after the core configuration works, one at a time, and test each one on demo.
MetaQuotes lists five interfaces for brokers on its MetaTrader 5 platform page:
- Server API: "can help you add more functions to MetaTrader 5 Trade Server and MetaTrader 5 History Server". Server plugins are built with it.
- Manager API: custom administration and management tools, or your own manager terminal. MetaQuotes' comparison lists C++, ASP.Net and PHP for MT5.
- Web API: integration with your website, client portal and other company services.
- Gateway API: integration with other trading systems and "creation of custom data feeds".
- Report API: extends the reports produced by the trade servers.
Typical plugin work: negative balance protection, IB commissions, copy trading or MAM/PAMM, exposure alerts. Plugins run inside the trade server, so insist on version control, support and a rollback plan. See MetaTrader plugin development, MetaTrader API integration and MAM/PAMM setup.
Decide early who receives which reports: client statements, end-of-day dealing and risk reports, and SQL export (MySQL, MSSQL or Oracle) into your back office. See reporting and analytics.
Testing and go-live checklist for a new MT5 server
Go live only after every trading path has been tested on demo with the real feed and the real liquidity route, staff have been trained, and backups have been restored at least once. MetaQuotes makes this the final step of its own brokerage guide:
"Test your trading platform and its trading condition settings. Make sure that all of the necessary features and tools are available to your clients, and that your staff is trained to operate it."— MetaQuotes, How to Start a Brokerage Business, Step 10 (accessed October 2026)
MetaQuotes also lists LP executions, leverage limits, negative balance protection, onboarding and client funds. Our matrix gives each a pass condition:
| Area | Test | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Orders | Market, limit, stop and stop-limit orders, partial fills, rejections | Correct price, volume and status in terminal, Manager and LP report |
| Margin | Margin call and stop-out in each group and leverage tier | Triggers at the configured levels; negative balance handled as designed |
| Feed | Primary feed off; spike injection; market open after weekend | Failover works; bad ticks filtered; no frozen symbols |
| Liquidity | A-book trades through the bridge; coverage account reconciliation | Positions match between MT5, bridge and LP |
| Sessions and swaps | Holiday schedule, rollover, triple-swap day, DST change | Swaps charged correctly; no trading outside sessions |
| Access | Login via every access point, web terminal and mobile | Clients find the server by name and connect from each target region |
| Integrations | Account opening from CRM, deposits, withdrawals, KYC | Balances and statuses match in CRM and MT5 |
| Recovery | Restore the main server from backup to a test host | Restore completes and data is consistent |
| People | Dealers and support staff run real scenarios | Written procedures for the top incidents; on-call rota set |
Once the checklist passes, open real accounts in stages, staff and friendly clients first.
Ongoing MT5 support after go-live
A live MT5 server needs daily attention: monitoring, updates, backups, risk reports and fast help during market hours. MetaQuotes has no access to your servers, so this sits with your team or a provider you appoint.
Monitoring and uptime
Server, feed, bridge and access point monitoring with alerts and log review, working to a 99.9% uptime target. See server monitoring.
Updates and changes
Planned installation of new MetaTrader 5 builds, symbol and group changes, new instruments and plugin releases, each tested before production.
Risk operations
End-of-day and evening reports, toxic-flow lists, session, holiday and DST schedule checks. See risk management.
Backups and recovery
Scheduled backups, off-site copies and periodic restore tests. See backup and recovery.
Troubleshooting
Rejected orders, disconnections, feed gaps and plugin faults. See server troubleshooting and common MetaTrader errors.
Administration
Day-to-day MT5 administration and manager support for your dealing desk. See MetaTrader administration and MT5 support.
Where server setup fits: company, license and regulation
Server setup is the last of three stages: a company with the right activities, MetaQuotes approval, then the technical build.
MetaQuotes reviews the company that will hold the license. In our experience it asks for corporate documents, proof of addresses, a compliant website, confirmation of trading or brokerage activities, a bank reference and identity checks. Many founders form an international business company (IBC) for this; see IBC company formation.
Saint Lucia is a common choice for the company itself. But be clear on one point: Saint Lucia does not issue forex licenses. Its IBC registry says so directly:
"Saint Lucia does not currently regulate or licence Forex Trading or Binary Options business."— Saint Lucia IBC Registry, FAQ (accessed October 2026)
A Saint Lucia IBC can be the company that holds your MT5 license; MetaQuotes accepting it is our experience, not published MetaQuotes policy. If your business model or target markets need a forex license, that license comes from another jurisdiction. Read Saint Lucia IBC, forex license, offshore forex regulation and, for onshore routes, CySEC, FCA and ASIC. This is general information, not legal advice.
